Mumbai, who had a nil biting game in Round 1 and managed to win by two wickets, had to witness a draw in Round 2 against Baroda. However, Mumbai did gain two points as they took the lead in the first innings against Baroda. The latter is also yet to win a game in Ranji Trophy as their matches have ended in draw in both the rounds. However, Punjab and Haryana have found their place secured in Group A. Which is why the match between Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh will be crucial as both the teams have secured respective points and are placed at the top. In Group B although Rajasthan is enjoying the top slot, Delhi and Odisha are also happy to be amongst the top three. The Delhi team will also witness some changes with inclusion of Ishant Sharma and Gautam Gambhir. Ranji Trophy 2016-17 Points Table & team standings
Ishant’s fitness will be put to test even as selectors will also keep an eye on comeback-man Gambhir as a strong Delhi side take on a depleted Karnataka in their Ranji Trophy cricket match on Thursday. It will also be a homecoming for Gambhir when the two-time IPL-winning Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take field at Eden Gardens. Viral fever, Chikungunya had forced gangling Ishant out of the three-Test series against New Zealand and he will be keen to make an impression ahead of the series against England. Former champions Karnataka will wear a depleted look as skipper R Vinay Kumar has joined Lokesh Rahul in the injury list and youngster Karun Nair has been named captain to lead the side for the first time in Ranji Trophy, reported PTI. Ranji Trophy 2016-17: Delhi take on Karnataka
Delhi team will be bolstered by the presence of India internationals Ishant and veteran Gambhir against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy match starting Thursday at Eden Gardens. Ishant was ruled out of New Zealand Test series due to chikungunya and Gambhir was busy on national duty. “Ishant and Gambhir will be playing in this match,” chief coach KP Bhaskar told PTI on Tuesday. Ishant’s fitness will be tested before New Zealand and Gambhir will like to reassert his place in the side as reserve opener in place of Shikhar Dhawan. Gambhir replaced Dhawan in playing XI at Indore scoring a second innings half century on the best batting strip in the series. Ranji Trophy 2016-17: Gambhir, Ishant to play for Delhi against Karnataka
Gambhir has been in the news lately for his brilliant performance in the recent Duleep Trophy 2016. The Delhi-cricketer led the side India Blue to win the title while himself was consistent with runs. His performance earned him a place in the national side for the Test series against New Zealand as KL Rahul was ruled out of the series due to hamstring injury. Ishant, on the other hand, failed to play a single match in the series, reported PTI again.
