South Africa finished the opening day at 329 for 5 with Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma on crease. While de Kock was playing on 25 off 31 balls, Bavuma had 32 runs to his name from 53 deliveries. LIVE CRICKET SCORE: England 138/2 in 46 overs; BATTING: Alastair Cook 67(142), Joe Root 31(68): England end the day with a lot of work still to do on Day Three. The good news for them is that Alastair Cook and Joe Root have built a good partnership and are looking well set. They will have to start all over again on Day Three. LIVE CRICKET SCORE: England 120/2 in 38 overs; BATTING: Alastair Cook 55(115), Joe Root 26(47): FOUR! Cook brings up his 47th Test fifty, as well as his first in the ongoing series, with a solid drive through the covers off the final ball of the 31st over that also brings up the 100 for England! Cook has finally found form after struggling in the first three Tests S(barring the second innings of the third Test). FOUR! Root gets down on one knee and sweeps the first ball of the 33rd over through backward point! FOUR! More boundaries, this time Root gets a top-edge off an attempted cut, with the ball travelling between the slips, through the gully towards the third-man boundary.

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: England 95/2 in 30 overs; BATTING: Alastair Cook 47(93), Joe Root 9(21): FOUR! Cook brings up the fifty partnership with a flick towards square-leg off Rabada, before following it up with a pull, with the ball bouncing once before crossing the boundary rope. OUT! Rabada breaks the 56-run partnership between Cook and Compton by dismissing the latter lbw for 19. Back of length delivery bowling along a straight line. Compton prepares for a backfoot shot, but gets rapped on his right pad at shin height as the ball keeps low. Joe Root walks out to bat now, and gets off the mark shortly afterwards.
