South Africa will resume their first innings on 252 for three on day two of the first Test against New Zealand at Newlands, after bowling out the Kiwis for 45 on day one.

Opener Alviro Petersen scored a fine unbeaten century and will look to start on a fresh slate today, with AB de Villiers (19 not out) by hgis side.

Petersen (103 not out) added 107 for the second wicket with Hashim Amla (66) and 104 with Jacques Kallis (66) for the third wicket.

During the course of the day Dale Steyn became the third fastest bowler to pick up 300 Test wickets while Kallis became the fourth batsman to surpass 13,000 Test runs.

Vernon Philander grabbed his eighth five-wicket haul in Test cricket as New Zealand were bowled out for 45 against South Africa. In doing so, Philander became the 11th bowler in Test cricket to bag a five-wicket haul in the first session of the match.

Morne Morkel picked up three wickets to add to New Zealand’s woes. Dale Steyn became the third fastest bowler to pick up 300 Test wickets when he dismissed Doug Bracewell for two.

New Zealand reached a new low when they were bowled out for 45, 34 runs less than their previous lowest total in against South Africa in Tests. This was New Zealand third lowest total ever in Test cricket. Their lowest came against England at Auckland in 1955 when they were bundled out for 26.
