Aided by half centuries from Gautam Gambhir, MS Dhoni and Manoj Tiwary, India reached a score of 294 for seven in the fifth One-Day International at Pallekele.
Gautam Gambhir top scored for India with 99-ball 88. He added 110 runs for the fourth wicket with Manoj Tiwary, who scored a 68-ball 65.
However, quick bursts by Sri Lanka reduced India to 219 for six in 40 overs. Lasith Malinga picked two wickets in two balls in the 37th over to put a break on the Indian run-march.
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Irfan Pathan revived the Indian innings with some lusty blows and quick running towards the end of the innings. They added 77 runs for the seventh wicket with Dhoni scroing a quickfire 58 runs from 38 balls.
During the course of the innings Gautam Gambhir crossed the 5000 run mark in ODIs. The southpaw reached the landmark in the fifth over with a pull shot off Lasith Malinga.
Earlier, India captain MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat against Sri Lanka.
Ajinkya Rahane who came in the team in place of Virender Sehwag managed to score only 9 off 17 balls.
