Roseau: Mar 21, 2013
West Indies off-spinner Shane Shillingford registered five-wicket haul and Chris Gayle followed up by an unbeaten 61 as West Indies dominated over Zimbabwe on Day One of the second Test at Roseau.
This was Shillingford’s third five-for in Tests. Marlon Samuels also supported the Dominican by picking up three wickets. Zimbabwean innings wrapped up for 175. Pacer Shannon Gabriel picked up two wickets.
Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor top scored with 33 and Vusi Sibanda scored 32. Debutant Sean Willians scored 31.
Gayle helped West Indies end the day at 114-2.
Kyle Jarvis removed Kieran Powell and Darren Bravo in quick succession when the home side replied, but Chris Gayle (61 not out) and Marlon Samuels (26 not out) reasserted the West Indies dominance in an unbroken 79-run third-wicket stand that took their team to the close at 114 for two.
It leaves the Zimbabweans needing a performance that has been beyond them in recent years in winning the test to square the series.
Brief Scores: Zimbabwe 175 (Brendan Taylor 33; Shane Shillingford 5 for 59) lead West Indies 114 for 2 (Chris Gayle 61*; Kyle Jarvis 2 for 35) by 61 runs.
