KKR 184/0 in 14.5 overs, Gambhir 76*, Lynn 93*: Would you believe it? KKR takes only 14.5 overs (31 balls to spare) to win the game vs GL? To top it all, they cruise past GL by 10 wickets. This is their first 10-wicket win (including CLT20 and IPL) and they will be mighty pleased with their efforts. Their ploy of making Lynn open the innings paid rich dividends as he finishes off the formalities by notching up 93 not out. Gauti’s form will be delightful news for KKR camp. He remains not out at 76 as GL bowlers were exposed due to inexperience and wayward bowling. No one was able to provide a single setback in KKR innings and this will play a big role in NRR going forward for both sides.

So that’s it! Never thought I would write this sentence so early. Nonetheless, we at CricketCountry are pleased as this gives us a chance to be free by 12, or 12:30. Still lots to do. Read our Match Report which will be filed in sometime. That’s it from us and do join us for tomorrow’s first double header with KXIP taking on RPS at Indore. The second tie will be held at Delhi between DD and RCB.

For now, KKR have ARRIVED courtesy some clean hitting.

Goodbye guys! Thank you for joining us…
  • 10:51 PM IST

KKR 153/0 in 13 overs, Gambhir 75*, Lynn 64*: 150-run mark crossed. Still, no success for GL. Such has been the carnage. Gauti batting on 75 whereas Lynn has taken the back seat at 64. 6 coming off Praveen Kumar’s last, but the scoreboard says it all…

  • 10:41 PM IST

KKR 131/0 in 11 overs, Gambhir 64*, Lynn 60*: 15 coming off Manpreet Gony’s over as nothing, absolutely nothing, clicking for GL. The match is almost over for GL. A big loss hovering over the Men in Orange’s camp. Gauti gets into the act with three fours as Gony struggles to maintain a consistent line all throughout the over. He gave enough room by bowling short and wide of off stump to make things easy for KKR.

I certainly didn’t see this coming in the innings break…

  • 10:35 PM IST

KKR 116/0 in 10 overs, Gambhir 50*, Lynn 60*: So the first 10 overs have almost sealed the deal for KKR. They have already piled up 116 runs in 60 balls. I tell you, Raina is certainly missing Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo to stop the carnage. Things looking bleak for GL.

Both the openers have got to their fifties with Gauti joining Lynn with a single off the last ball of the 10th.
  • 10:27 PM IST

KKR 103/0 in 8 overs, Gambhir 45*, Lynn 52*: Would you believe it? First economical over as only 7 came off it. Shadab Jakati curbs the entertainment to some extend. KKR are in such a position and that all they have to do is keep finding the gaps and milking the ball towards the ropes occasionally. It’s that simple! Let’s see what we have in store after the strategic time-out

  • 10:23 PM IST

KKR 96/0 in 7 overs, Gambhir 40*, Lynn 50*: Are we seeing the highlights? Cause all I can see is Lynn-Gauti firing on all cylinders. They are literally hammering each and every ball. Another expensive over as Raina’s ploy of bringing on his part timer, Dwayne Smith, back fires. 23 comes off Smith’s over which included three sixes. With such a carnage, Lynn brings up his first fifty in IPL 10.

  • 10:19 PM IST

KKR 73/0 in 6 overs, Gambhir 36*, Lynn 27*: Oh god! I feel for GL bowlers. They have conceded over 70 runs in the first 6 overs. Shivil Kaushik goes for 20 in his second over, including 5 fours. All we are witnessing here is the ball going all round the park in almost every ball. What is happening there for GL?

  • 10:11 PM IST
KKR 46/0 in 4 overs, Gambhir 18*, Lynn 26*: Some respite for GL. Only 9 (seeing the context of the game) comes from the chinaman, Shivil Kaushik’s first over. Still, KKR are going at 11 per over. Perfect start for KKR. Lynn, carrying his BBL form, is taking on each bowler and attacking at will.
  • 10:09 PM IST
KKR 37/0 in 3 overs, Gambhir 13*, Lynn 22*: Gambhir started Manpreet Gony’s over spanking him down the ground. The open stance assists Gauti to judge the length of Gony’s delivery and put him under pressure straight away. Lynn did the rest as he is using the long handle to great effect! He is playing the golf, or baseball shots, to send GL bowlers over the ropes. Great start this from KKR as they are getting runs at 13 per over. Gony goes for 17 in his first over.
  • 10:01 PM IST

KKR 20/0 in 2 overs, Gambhir 8*, Lynn 12*: Well, I have been answered as to why Lynn has opened the innings along with Gauti. He sends one to the orbit with a huge six to show off his intentions. Meanwhile, Gambhir also got into the act with a stylish four, straight down the ground, to smack Dhawal Kulkarni in his first over. KKR start off well at 10 per over.

  • 9:56 PM IST

KKR 7/0 in 1 over, Gambhir 2*, Lynn 5*: Some strange tactics here by KKR as we see a new pair out there in the middle. Gambhir is being accompanied by Lynn. Where is Uthappa? Nonetheless, the first over leaks only 7 runs, courtesy a last-ball boundary from Lynn’s blade, as Praveen Kumar begins porceedings for GL.

  • 9:32 PM IST

GL 183/4 in 20 overs, Raina 68*, Smith 0*: And that’s the end of GL innings. Brilliant knock and partnership by Karthik-Raina. The duo were seen struggling in the middle overs, but seemed like they waited and backed their strengths to blast 30 runs in the last 2 overs. Momemtum certainly in GL’s hand. It won’t be easy for a well-balanced KKR side to chase down the total on a tricky track. Raina ends with an unbeaten 68 whereas Karthik played a blinder, scoring 47 off 25 balls.

Join us in 15 minutes as I finally get a chance to rush to the washroom and have my dinner. Again, spare a thought for me guys!
  • 9:26 PM IST

GL 169/3 in 19 overs, Raina 63*, Karthik 39*: An expensive over! GL firing on all cylinders courtesy Raina-Karthik. Karthik playing a gem of an innings along with Raina who has held his end despite not being ‘that impressive’ by his standards. Woakes goes for 16 and finishes off his 4 fours, conceding 35 runs. Two fours and a maximum to end the penultimate over.

  • 9:21 PM IST

GL 153/3 in 18 overs, Raina 58*, Karthik 28*: Not a bad over from Boult but he goes for 12. That is why, we often hear commentators say “T20I is a cruel game for bowlers”. An inside edge got Raina a lucky boundary before Karthik finished things off in style by hammering Boult straight down the ground for missing the yorker. As a result, GL cross the 150-run mark.

  • 9:16 PM IST

GL 141/3 in 17 overs, Raina 52*, Karthik 23*: After five singles and a dropped chance by Yusuf Pathan at deep fine leg, Dinesh Karthik finally brakes the shackles with a huge six to finish Chawla’s over by adding 11 runs. GL would want at least 30-35 more in the last 3 overs.

  • 9:11 PM IST

GL 130/3 in 16 overs, Raina 49*, Karthik 15*: Kuldeep Yadav bowls another splendid over to finish off his spell. He gave away only 25 and took two important wickets. Raina, on the other hand, is living a charmed life with some half chances falling short off KKR fielders. The bottom line is, he is still there for GL.

  • 9:06 PM IST

GL 125/3 in 15 overs, Raina 45*, Karthik 14*: Narine finishes off his spell conceding only 9 in his last over. Raina-Karthik need to go on and add at least another 50 in the last 5 overs. Nonetheless, with wickets in hand, they will like to get more than 180.

Kuldeep Yadav comes to bowl the 16th…
  • 9:02 PM IST

GL 116/3 in 14 overs, Raina 42*, Karthik 8*: In the last 5 overs, only 25 runs have come in GL’s innings. KKR spinners are pulling things back in these middle overs. Raina-Karthik are not getting the big ones but wil fancy their chances going forward.

  • 8:58 PM IST

GL 109/3 in 13 overs, Raina 36*, Karthik 7*: Another economical over. Gambhir shuffling his bowlers really well here as Narine sneaks in one before the last 5 overs. Karthik sends the ball to the ropes on one occasion but this over belonged to KKR. Will they manage to curb the run flow in the last 5 overs?

  • 8:55 PM IST

GL 102/3 in 12 overs, Raina 34*, Karthik 2*: Another tidy over in a crucial part of the innings. Boult comes back into the attack and goes for only 7. Raina picks up a boundary to get some momentum and GL will want more of these in the remaining overs. This pair, Karthik-Raina, have been successful vs KKR and the onus will be on them to take the team score above 180.

  • 8:51 PM IST
GL 95/3 in 11 overs, Raina 28*, Karthik 1*: Kuldeep Yadav, you beauty! He gets rid of Aaron Finch. Excellent captaincy and equally impressive bowling from Yadav. Dinesh Karthik comes out in the middle to support Raina. Gl still have a good platform, going at almost 9 per over, to brake the shackles in the death overs.
  • 8:45 PM IST

GL 92/2 in 10 overs, Raina 25*, Finch 15*: End of half the innings. Yusuf Pathan introduced into the attack but Finch takes him on with two beautiful maximums. Overall, 15 coming off the over as GL have a good platform to accelerate from hereon.

  • 8:43 PM IST

GL 76/2 in 9 overs, Raina 23*, Finch 2*: Kuldeep Yadav gets rid of McCullum. He tossed up, inviting McCullum for a biggie, but the New Zealander missed it, trying to work it on the on-side as the ball straightened and hit his pads. The umpire had no doubt in raising his fingers. In comes, Aaron Finch. Raina-Finch will be eager to cash in the middle over with calculative risks.

On the other hand, credit goes to Gambhir for using his bowlers well, especially the spinners who have always looked for wickets. Yadav has this knack of breaking partnerships and he did just that as the pair of Raina-McCullum was looking threatening.
  • 8:37 PM IST

GL 72/1 in 8 overs, McCullum 35*, Raina 21*: A much better over from Woakes. He used al his variations, bowling half-volleys, full and good length deliveries. Woakes even followed the batsmen till the end to alter his length. This is why he is such an improved bowler in recent times. Raina, nonetheless, gets a four off the last ball but KKR will be happy with the Englishman’s efforts.

  • 8:33 PM IST

GL 64/1 in 7 overs, McCullum 34*, Raina 15*: Gambhir introduces Kuldeep Yadav into the attack. It was going all well for the youngster before McCullum hammered him for a six and four to end the over in GL’s favour. Yadav was guilty of bowling short before the last delivery was a McCullum-special. He came down the track, anticipating the length, and smashed the chinaman bowler for a maximum. He is looking in some form.

  • 8:30 PM IST

GL 52/1 in 6 overs, McCullum 23*, Raina 12*: Chris Woakes begins his IPL journey in the sixth over. Nonetheless, not a pleasant start as Suresh Raina takes him on and blasts two fours. His first delivery, a fraction fuller and on the length, is hammered down the ground and Raina follows it with another one off a short ball. Certainly some shorter balls will be on display till the time GL’s skipper is out there. There was a chance as well and Kuldeep Yadav did well, but could not hold onto the catch. Overall, good over from GL!

  • 8:22 PM IST

  • 8:22 PM IST

GL 40/1 in 5 overs, McCullum 23*, Raina 2*: 11 coming off Sunil Narine’s second over as he gets his length wrong on two occasions. McCullum smacked him hard with a cut and followed it with a pull off a short ball, asking to be hit. Raina must be enjoying this and will like to join the party soon.

  • 8:19 PM IST

GL 29/1 in 4 overs, McCullum 13*, Raina 1*: It’s all happening here at Rajkot. Roy, after a brief cameo, departs for 14 as he plays a nothing shot to get caught by Yusuf Pathan off Chawla. He rocked back for a pull, but a half hearted shot resulted in his departure. On the other hand, McCullum is getting into the groove as he earned his first maximum towards deep mid wicket region. Accompanying him his Suresh Raina at No. 3. The duo will certainly take the game away from KKR if they survive till the next 5-6 overs.

  • 8:14 PM IST

GL 22/0 in 3 overs, Roy 14*, McCullum 7*: McCullum gets his first boundary towards point through a blazing cut. Nonetheless, only 6 coming off Sunil Narine’s first over. Spin employed from both ends as Gambhir is certainly playing with the opening pair’s weakness against spin. Roy is tentative against the tweakers and the KKR dugout will want to get rid of him soon.

I reckon this game will be a crackling contest. It surely is KKR bowlers vs GL batsmen.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket updates of Match No 3 between Gujarat Lions (GL) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017. The match will be played at GL’s home ground Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. I, Aditya Sahay, will try to make this blog as entertaining as possible, given the opening ceremonies have been rather mind-numbing. Gujarat will see a wounded Lion in Suresh Raina lead their side, while Kolkata will have their knight in purple amour and no non-sense skipper Gautam Gambhir captaining them.  Full Cricket Scorecard, Gujarat Lions vs Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2017, Match 3

Lions look the more settled side with an array of explosive batsmen at their disposal. The likes of Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith and Aaron Finch will be keenly watched, while England opener Jason Roy will be under the pump to emulate his international form. Raina, who is making a comeback after a long break, will want to get the much-needed match time under his belt. The only concern for Lions will be the unavailability of Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja, who miss out due to injuries. Their bowling duties will be taken care by the Indian quadrate of Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Dhawal Kulkarni and Shivil Kaushik.

KKR meanwhile have their own conundrum to sort. Gambhir, along with Robin Uthappa, will continue to open the batting with Manish Pandey coming in at No. 3. Their middle order looks solid on paper but have been out of form. With no Andre Russell and Shakib Al Hasan in their ranks, much will depend on Yusuf Pathan and Suryakumar Yadav to provide late-order blitz. Chris Lynn and Chris Woakes will be highly anticipated to display their all-round skills. With no Umesh Yadav for the initial few games, international talents like Trent Boult and Nathan Coutler-Nile will be expected to shine. India’ new-found hero Kuldeep Yadav will take care of spin-bowling in the absence of Sunil Narine and Shakib.
