Both Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2017 points table, having made an ordinary start to the tournament and will be taking the second game on Friday as a must-win contest. With two defeats and one victory in the three matches played so far, Rising Pune Supergiant are at the seventh spot in the IPL 2017 points table. The Steven Smith-led side has lost two games after winning the opening clash, and have a Net Run Rate of -1.718 and 2 points. On the other hand, the Suresh Raina-led Gujarat Lions have been at their worst, losing both the matches by heavy margins and not have a NRR of -2.731. It is amply clear that both Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant need victories by huge margins to improve their NRR.
The two teams will be bolstered with the return of their key players. Gujarat Lions would be relieved to have Ravindra Jadeja back after a short break, whereas Rising Pune Supergiant will have the run-machine in Smith returning to the playing XI, after missing the previous contest due to an upset stomach.
The biggest worry for Gujarat Lions heading into this clash is their bowling. The bowlers have not been able to make an impact whatsoever, with the Gujarat Lions crashing to a 10-wicket defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), while against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), they lost by 9 wickets.
On the other hand, after starting off impressively with a 7-wicket victory in the first match, RPS have also suffered two defeats. RPS lost to Kings XI Punjab by 6 wickets, and were mauled by Delhi Daredevils (DD) by a heavy margin of 97 runs.
