Excellent effort by Rahane at deep mid-wicket. Takes the catch and passes onto Smith before he steps past the boundary, but touches the line at the last moment. SIX for McClenagha. Mumbai need 30 off 6.

Tue, 16 May 2017 11:38:29 pm

With a required run rate of over 15, it is going to be an uphill climb for Mumbai Indias. Well, well, well. Another slower delivery gets a wicket. Karn Sharma induces a top edge. MS Dhoni gets under it and makes no mistake. Bumrah joins McClenaghan and hoikes a six. Mumbai Indians need 39 runs in 12 balls.
Tue, 16 May 2017 11:16:59 pm

Fifty for Parthiv Patel. That also brings up 100 for Mumbai Indians. He has been brilliant tonight. However, Krunal Pandya falls prey to knuckle ball. He scores 15 off 11. McClenaghan joins Parthiv in the middle. The required run rate has scaled up over 11. And wait, Parthiv goes off the last ball. Mumbai Indians need 60 runs in 30 balls.
Tue, 16 May 2017 11:04:29 pm

Washington Sundar to complete his full quota. This is spectacular cricket. He finishes off with the figures of 3 for 16. Parthiv Patel unbeaten on 48. Mumbai Indians need 78 runs in 42 balls.
Tue, 16 May 2017 11:00:19 pm

OUT! Hardik Pandya connects well but does not get enough elevation. Dan Christian, at long-on, makes no mistake. MI loose half their side. They need to put Parthiv on strike. He needs to get most strike. A wicket and 6 runs off it. Mumbai Indians need 82 runs in 48 balls

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:52:12 pm

Dan Christian now. Smith is using up all his bowlers, mixing up the pace as well. Good over. Only 4 runs conceded. Mumbai Indians need 88 runs in 54 balls.
Tue, 16 May 2017 10:47:56 pm

Zampa into the attack and Pandya shows no mercy. A six over long-off. Excellent counterattack.Mumbai Indians need to put pressure back on RPS. They need 92 runs in 60 balls.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:44:07 pm

Nothing has affected Parthi Patel tonight. He is batting on a different track altogether. He has scored 75% of MI's runs. Hardik Pandya, too, joins the party. 11 runs off the over. Mumbai Indians need 101 runs in 66 balls.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:36:59 pm

Sundar continues. Parthiv unbeaten on 34. He has scored bulk of the runs so far. At the other end is Pollard and he goes as well. Flicks straight to Smith. MI lose 4 wickets. They need need 112 runs in 72 balls.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:33:03 pm

Ferguson back into the attack. Good ploy to finish off his over when MI in pressure. But, wait. Pollard collects a four off the last over. Mumbai Indians need 115 runs in 78 balls

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:28:55 pm

Oh, boy! Second wicket dow. Rohit falls for one. Tries to sweep an off-spinner of Washington. Caught in front. This is a big, big wicket. In comes Rayudu and he joins his captain in the dugout. Holes out to Smith at mid-wicket. What an over. A run and two wickets of it.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:23:53 pm

FOUR! Parthiv welcomes Parthiv in his own style. OUT! Pathiv slams it down the ground. Shardul gets his hand on it and ricochets it onto the stumps. Simmons is out of the creas already. RPS draw first blood. Mumbai Indians need 122 runs in 90 balls.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:18:03 pm

Ferguson in action. He bangs the ball in. Different approach, this. RPS mixing up their strategies. But hey, that does not stop Parthiv. He collects another six. You cannot bowl short to him. 10 runs off the over.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:14:06 pm

SIX to start the over. He means business. He knows that MI have to take full advantage of the new ball. However, the ball keeps the biting the surface. It is going to be a hell of a chase for MI. They need 144 runs in 17 overs.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:08:11 pm

Washinton Sundar to bowl the second over. RPS take pace off the ball. They know Parthiv and Simmons like it when the ball comes on to the bat well. Brilliant strategy. But, wait. Washinton bowls flat and Parthiv flicks it over deep square-leg. 8 runs off the over.

Tue, 16 May 2017 10:04:24 pm

Simmons takes strike. Unadkat has the ball. PLAY and MISS to start with. Unadkat follows it with off-cutters. Excellent ploy by Unadkat. Only 1 run off the over.
Reminder: the track is painfully slow.

**MI innings**

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:45:28 pm

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:44:29 pm

Bumrah to bowl the last over. ONE. Slower ball deceives Tiwary. SIX. Flat. Dhoni bags his fourth maximu. On the up, over extra cover. TWO. Excellent running between the wicket. Such genius. How fast is Dhoni? SIX. In the slot. Dhoni hits it over sight screen. DOT. Yorker. Stock delivery. Top-drawer stuff, this. OUT. Run out. The only way Tiwary could have gotten out.
MI need 163 runs to qualify for final.
Tue, 16 May 2017 09:39:17 pm

A boundary and a free-hit. And 50 for Manoj Tiwary. He takes as many as 45 balls. SIX off the free-hit. 11 runs off 1 ball. Pressure on McClenaghan. Now Dhoni joins the rampage. Right in the slot for MS Dhoni. SIX over deep mid-wicket. Crowd cheers for Dhoni. 2 consecutive wide by McClenaghan. SIX to end the over. Dhoni on fire. 26 runs off the over.

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:30:19 pm

Bumrah to bowl his penultimate over. Tiwary nicely pulls. Simmons, at fine-leg, touches the boundary line as he slide. Much needed boundary for Tiwary. However, Bumrah bags consecutive dot delivieries against Dhoni. Only 7 runs off it. Are you yawning? This is not the playoffs we were expecting.

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:24:24 pm

McClenaghan around the wicket. Starts with a wide, but makes amends by bowling in the right channel. Dhoni and Tiwary both struggle to find their feet. Excellent over. Only 5 runs off it. RPS under fire.

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:18:09 pm

Krunal against Dhoni. Clever move by Rohit. Meanwhile, Tiwary struggles. It is time he drops the anchor. Or simply let Dhoni take the centre stage. But Krunal does not give flight all. He does not give any room to the batsman. How do you score against him? Tidy spell comes to an end.

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:14:45 pm

Last over for Karn Sharma. He has bowled exceedingly well tonight. Can he get the better of Dhoni? NO. Dhoni shimmies down the track and hoikes it over deep mid-wicket. RPS need more of these. Fasten your seat belts.

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:11:20 pm

Dhoni special needed. RPS need at least 160 to defend. Let us not forget that Mumbai do remarkably well under pressure. They do not, come what may, succumb to it. Rohit brings Bumrah against Dhoni. And Bumrah does it again. Only 6 runs off it.

Tue, 16 May 2017 09:03:24 pm

Rohit Sharma brings Karn Sharma back into the attack and gets the better of Rahane. The ball helds it line and caughts Rahane in front. Easy decision for the umpire. Absolutely plumb. Rahane goes for 56. In comes MS Dhoni.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:58:09 pm

Manoj Tiwary finally gets a boundary. Nicely sweeps into the gap. Rahane, too, joins the party. He sweeps as well. McClenaghan, in the deep, could not stop it. Fifty for Rahane. Takes only 39 balls.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:53:48 pm

Malinga back into the attack. Rahane completes 3,000 runs in IPL with a cut past point. Third-man is up. Good placement by Rahane. Tiwary, at the other end, continues to struggle. 9 runs off the over.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:49:03 pm

Krunal continues and continues keeping a lid on the runs. RPS deal in singles against him. He reads the batsman's foot work well and adjusts the length of the delivery accordingly. Only 5 runs off it. RPS 63 for 2 in 10 overs.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:45:47 pm

Hardik into the attack and Rahane welcomes him with a six down town. Tiwary needs to keep Rahane on strike. Let us not forget that MS Dhoni is yet to bat. He loves playing at Wankhede. Meanwhile, Tiwary inside-edges for four. He has not looked convincing at all tonight. A boundary nonetheless. 10 runs off the over.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:41:49 pm

Krunal Pandya into the attack. Bowls a quicker one. Pushes Rahane on the back foot. Rahane then shimmies down but gets no run. Top-drawer cricket. Only a run off the over. Tiwary is 17 off 13. Either him or Rahane has to drop the anchor.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:35:56 pm

SIX. Into the stands. Manoj Tiwary gets enough elevation. Targets Karn Sharma. That was it. Only boundary off the over. RPS going at a run rate of 6.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:33:48 pm

Only 33 runs in the powerplay. Tripathi and Smith are already back in the pavilion. Excellent start for Mumbai Indians. The onus now on Rahane and Tiwary to save the stinking ship.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:28:01 pm

Leg-spinner Karn Sharma into the attack. Agressive captaincy, this. That, or anything, will not stop Rahane. Makes room and whacks through extra-cover. Another for the diminutive Mumbaikar. Good over, though. Only 7 runs off it. RPS 31/2 in 5 overs.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:23:50 pm

Bumrah into the attack. Angles in. Tiwary flicks it to fine-leg for one. The ball is coming sweetly onto the bat. Excellent bowling. Only 5 runs off it. All in the corridor of uncertainty.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:19:59 pm

FOUR. That came right out of the screws. Rahane unaffected by early blows. FOUR more. That was class-apart. Play on the up, past cover. Delightful batsmanship. I tell you, Rahane knows this track. This is his den. He owns it.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:14:44 pm

Malinga from the other hand. No yorker. He starts off with length delivery. Smith gets off the mark. Before this contest, in 8 matches against MI, he had accumulated 289 runs. However, he contributes only a run. Gets a top edge. Hardik Pandya takes an easy catch. RPS lose 2nd wicket. 2 wickets in 2 overs. MI on fire.

Tue, 16 May 2017 08:08:38 pm

McClenaghan to Rahane. Length ball. Angled in. DOT delivery to start the proceedings. There is some movement on this red, batsman-friendly Wankhede track. McClenaghan garners some pace and bounce as well. MI simply have to get behind the ball and time it through gaps. Rahane, a Mumbaikar, knows this track well. Meanwhile, McClenaghan cleans up the in-form Tripathi. Middle stump goes for a toss. Swung in late. MI draw first blood.

Like you do not judge a book by its cover, do not judge this contest by the friendly feature image. The animosity between Steven Smith and some of the Indian players since February 2017 was one of the reasons we used this image. The world can be a happy place for sure and cricket can do its bit to eclipse the controversy part. Anyways, welcome to the live coverage of the Qualifier I on Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017. I am Kaustubh Mayekar and will bring you the live updates from the big Maharashtra derby between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) from Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Full Cricket Scorecard: Mumbai Indians vs Rising Pune Supergiant, IPL 2017, Qualifier 1 at Mumbai

The winner of this contest will fly straight to Hyderabad to play the tournament final on Sunday. The losing side will have another chance on Friday at Bengaluru when they take on the winner of the Eliminator. Though it is not a knockout contest, there is still the final spot at stake. MI have been the best side in the tournament. They topped the league stages with 20 points and have looked to be the most balanced unit in the competition. They are even more formidable at home and without an iota of doubt they start as favourites.

However, RPS have a 3-1 advantage over Mumbai. MI have lost only 3 games this season and 2 of them have been against the Pune side. However, without Ben Stokes the Pune side lacks the zing and the X-factor. They have quality and form in Smith, MS Dhoni, Manoj Tiwary, Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Tripathi, Jaydev Unadkat, etc. but they need more than that to counter Rohit Sharma s MI.

Being Mumbai boys, Shardul Thakur and Rahane know Wankhede well and RPS will count on them. However, to cross the hurdle against a side that has Rohit, Ambati Rayudu, Kieron Pollard, Lendl Simmons, Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and the Pandya brothers, RPS will have to play their best cricket.

Toss is going to play a crucial role. All in all, let us brace ourselves for this run-fest.
