Jharkhand lost early wickets after deciding to bat first
Jamshedpur: Dec 6, 2011
A brilliant 84 by opener Manish Vardhan and his 93-run third wicket partnership with in-form Ishank Jaggi (42) helped Jharkhand reach 218 on the opening day of the four-day plate group Ranji Trophy encounter against Goa at Keenan Stadium.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Jharkhand received a setback in the very first ball of the third over when Goa’s strike bowler Saurabh Bandekar had opener Rameez Nemat bowled for one.
Ratan Kumar (9), who stepped in following Nemat’s dismissal, did not last long as seamer Robin D’souza struck having him caught off Ryan D’souza with Jharkhand score reading at 30 for 2.
Jaggi, who had slammed a scintillating 188 against Assam at Dhanbad, started off on a confident note and steadied the innings in the company of his senior Vardhan, who was well settled at the other end.
They both displayed stroke play and treated the loose deliveries accordingly before Jaggi was bowled by Amit Yadav.
Jaggi scored 42 studded with four hits to fence off 106 deliveries.
Vardhan followed the suit when S S Yadav struck in the 65th over.
Middle-order batsman Deepak Chougule, who walked in after S P Gautam’s (2) departure, played confidently adding 34 runs for the fifth wicket with Vardhan and 45-runs for eighth wicket with Jaskaran Singh (12).
Chougule, who remained unbeaten on 45, struck four fours off 105 balls.
Bandekar and Robin D’Souza emerged successful bowlers for Goa sharing three wickets apiece while Amit Yadav scalped two wickets.
In reply, Goa lost the opener Anup Kolabkar (0) as new ball bowler S S Rao had him leg before in the only over bowled in their innings. At stumps, Sher Bahadur Yadav was batting at one. (PTI)
Brief Scores: Jharkhand 218 (Manish Vardhan 93; Saurabh Bandekar 3 for 37, Robin D’Souza 3 for 36) vs Goa.
Goa 2/1.
