Mathew Wade rubbished rumours about directly referring the on-field umpire Joe Wilson for a review in the first One Day International (ODI) against England at Cardiff on Thursday. Had Wilson acted upon Wade’s call, it would have breached the International Cricket Council’s Playing Conditions, Law 3.1 (a) of the Playing Conditions for one-day internationals states that “only the captain (or acting captain) of the fielding team may request a Player Review of a ‘Not Out’ decision”. The visitors won the opening game by a margin of 59 runs, thereby taking a lead of 1-0 in the five ODIs series. SCORECARD: Australia vs England, 1st ODI at Cardiff, Australia won by 59 runs

According to a report from Cricket Australia, the wicket-keeper batsman was convinced to have taken a sharp catch to remove Ben Stokes in the 30th over of England’s run chase in Southampton after the allrounder played a reverse sweep at a ball from off-spinner Glenn Maxwell. When the umpire shook his head, Wade immediately signalled Maxwell that Australia should review and in turn Steven Smith asked Wilson to call on the third umpire.

“No, I wasn’t trying to review it to the umpires. I was more trying to say to Maxi ‘I thought he hit it definitely’, but I definitely wasn’t trying to review it straight away. I would prefer to go to the captain if I can. (Smith) hasn’t said anything yet to me but I’m sure he would be a little bit dirty because it wasn’t out,” Wade said. READ: Australia ease past England by 59 runs in 1st ODI at Southampton to take 1-0 lead in the series

Player of the match, Wade, who said that skipper Smith hasn’t spoken to him about this controversy yet, might be “a little bit dirty” with him for wasting the last review Australia had in the match. The incident would have mattered had Australia finished on the losing side, since that did not happen everything is cool in their dressing room.
