Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that India is going to prefer facing Australia in the finals of the Champions Trophy 2025. The Men in Blue are set to face New Zealand in their last league match, and in case they win this match- they will be the table-toppers of this group. Indian team will then face runners-up of Group B- Australia in the semifinal.
Sunil stated that both the teams are fierce, but India since has faced Australia a lot of times, they will prefer to play against them.
“Both teams are formidable teams, make no mistake. There’s no such team that India will say, because now they know, they’ve come to the knockout stages. Here it’s now make or break, so I don’t think they would prefer to have any team,” Gavaskar told India today.
“Maybe Australia because they’ve played Australia, they know Australia a little bit better than South Africa whom they last played in the T20 World Cup 2024 final,” he further explained.
Gavaskar also pointed out that since Australia is missing out on their main bowlers, it can also be a point to consider and think about facing Australia.
“So maybe they might prefer Australia because Australia are without their main bowlers. There’s no Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood so maybe they would want to play them,” he concluded.

India’s scenario to face Australia
Australia has finished second in Group B, so India needs to come out of Group A as the table-toppers. India and New Zealand are both undefeated in the tournament. Hence, the winner of the match is going to secure the top position in the points table and face Australia.
