Arunachal Pradesh and Hyderabad were playing for the 2023–24 Ranji Trophy at the NFC Cricket Ground in Secunderabad. On Friday, Hyderabad’s opener Tanmay Agarwal made history by finishing Day One at 529/1.
With a strike rate of 201.88, the 28-year-old hit an unbeaten 323 off 160 balls, complete with 33 fours and 21 sixes. This knock also made him the fourth-best striker among all batters with at least 200 runs in an innings. In first-class cricket, it is also the best by an Indian batter.
In addition, the opener made history by becoming the fastest player in first-class cricket history to hit a triple ton, accomplishing it in 147 balls and going from 200 to 300 in just 28 deliveries.
Rahul Singh Gahlaut, Tanmay’s opening partner, went for 185 in 105 balls as Hyderabad scored over 11 runs each over. In first-class cricket, the combination’s 449 for the first wicket is fifth-best for an Indian pair. After hitting 20, Tanmay just needs four more maximums to record the most sixes in a single first-class innings. Currently holding the record is Colin Munro of New Zealand, who in 2014–15 scored 23 sixes in his 281 knocks for Auckland versus Central Districts.
He would become the Indian batsman with the highest first-class score if he scores 443 on Day 2. The current record holder, Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, registered 443* for Maharashtra in 1948. Brian Lara (501*) set the all-time record in 1994, although it is likewise breakable.
Initially, Techi Doria top-scored for his team with an unbeaten 97 off 127 balls as Arunachal Pradesh scored 172 in 39.4 overs. Chama Milind and Kartikeya Kak each claimed three wickets for Hyderabad.
In all, 701 runs were scored in 87.4 overs on the day—only the second time in first-class cricket history that 700 runs had been scored in a single day. Additionally, it is the first time in the format’s history that two teams have made more than 700 in a single playday. That happened in 1950.

At the end of the day’s play, the 28-year-old left-handed opener was still undefeated at 323* off 160 balls. In just 48 overs, Hyderabad amassed a total of 529/1 thanks to his 33 fours and 21 sixes.
Tanmay shattered the red-ball cricket record for the fastest triple hundred held by Marco Marais of South Africa. In the 2017 South African domestic first-class cricket match against Eastern Province, Marais hit a 191-ball triple century for Border.
