Former England skipper Michael Atherton took a dig at MS Dhoni in his column on the Kevin Pietersen-ECB controversy. India, who were trounced in the Test series in England earlier this year, faced stinging criticism for their abject surrender; a fact that was alluded to by Atherton.
In his column in the times.co.uk, Atherton wrote, “Maybe England supporters want a coach and captain who appear unconcerned about looking like a rabble. India’s captain [MS Dhoni] didn’t appear to be too concerned about losing a Test in three days this summer. Said he was happy for the extra days off. Just another game. I don’t think England supporters want that.”
Atherton was writing about how the England dressing room ought to be a safe haven for their cricketers, and objected to the “bullying” culture it had developed according to Pietersen. Atherton went on to say that he had personally said and done things very uncharacteristic of himself, but that it had all occurred behind the closed doors of the dressing room rather than out in the middle.
