Australia’s retiring skipper, Michael Clarke and retiring batsman, Chris Rogers were both given the guard of honour by the Australian team, following the conclusion of the 5th Test at The Oval on Sunday, which Australia won by an innings and 46 runs, although they lost the Ashes 3-2 during the fourth Test at Nottingham. Australia have wrapped up the final Test at The Oval with a dominating, all-round effort to exit the Ashes this season with the score-line bridged to 3-2. England resisted longer than they did in the first innings, but a persistent Australian attack, embodied by the sharpness of comeback fast bowler Peter Siddle, got them all out on the afternoon of the fourth day before they could make Australia bat again. Michael Clarke‘s decision to retire has resulted in polarised opinions from all quarters. While John Buchanan, Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds have critcised Clarke’s captaincy skills after he announced retirement, Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting have put their weight behind the retiring captain. Clarke’s teammates though had kind words to say about him. Among those who paid tribute include the incumbent coach Darren Lehmann and captain-to-be Steven Smith. Rogers along with Clarke and Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara has last four days of international cricket ahead of him, provided the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Oval happen for all five days unlike the previous two matches that had ended inside three days, letting England seal the tournament 3-1. There were all smiles on the Australian cricketers during their practice session on Day two of the fifth Test as they gave Rogers a guard of honour.
