Half-centuries by Misbah-ul Haq and Asad Shafiq took Pakistan to 198 for four at lunch on Day Four of the second Test at Dubai on Saturday.
Resuming the day on 132 for four, the pair remained unbeaten adding 66 runs in the first session of play. The deficit was reduced to 220 runs
Earlier on Friday, South Africa were fined five penalty runs during the third day of the second and final Test against Pakistan for ball tampering allegations.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) informed on Twitter, “Umpires replace ball and fine South Africa five runs for ball tampering on third day in the Dubai Test.”
The incident happened before the start of the 31st over of Pakistan’s second innings as umpires Rod Tucker (Australia) and Ian Gould (England) called South Africa captain Graeme Smith for a chat.
Though no player was called during the talk, replays on television showed Faf du Plessis rubbing the ball on his trousers which had a zip.
The umpires changed the ball and penalised South Africa by five runs.
Pakistan showed a much-improved bowling performance from Day Two as Mohammad Irfan dismissed AB de Villiers early for 164. Irfan dished out a full delivery outside de Villiers’s off-stump and Adnan Akmal took a simple catch. Graeme Smith (234) fell after adding just seven runs to his overnight score. He was caught by Akmal after dropping him earlier. Saeed Ajmal got his third wicket in the pursuit.
Irfan produced an inswinger to knock JP Duminy over for seven. The tall left-arm fast bowler was running on the danger area. He had been warned twice. In the 149th over, he was warned for the third time and he had to be taken off from the attack.
Ajmal went through the gate of Vernon Philander for eight. The loop was inviting and the ball dipped on Philander and hoodwinked him. He then had Morne Morkel caught at slip for seven and the final wicket was that of his Lahore spin partner (the two made the First-Class debut in the same game) Imran Tahir for two. Faf du Plessis was left stranded on 17.
Pakistan lost openers Shan Masood and Khurram Manzoor in a matter of less than two overs. Will Pakistan show signs of resurrection or will they surrender meekly?
