Retired Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar wished Mitchell Johnson good luck after the latter announced his intention to retire from international cricket on Tuesday. Johnson, who is currently playing his 73rd Test, made the news of his retirement public ahead of the start of play on the final day of the second Test between Australia and New Zealand at the WACA in Perth on Tuesday. “Good luck to @MitchJohnson398 who has always been a special bowler. Got to know him well at @mipaltan and enjoyed his aggressive approach!,” Tendulkar was quoted as writing in a post on his Twitter account. Tendulkar and Johnson played alongside each other for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013 season. “I feel now is the best time to say goodbye. It’s been an incredible ride. But the ride has to come to an end at some point and to do so here at the WACA is very special,” the pacer was quoted as saying ahead of the day’s play, having hinted at the same a couple of days earlier to the main announcement. Johnson is the latest Australian cricketer to bid goodbye to the sport following the likes of Michael Clarke, Chris Rogers, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris and Shane Watson (Tests), all of whom quit around the Ashes 2015.
Johnson is currently the fourth-highest all-time wicket-taker for Australia in Tests, having moved past Brett Lee with a solitary wicket during the New Zealand innings in the Perth Test, sitting behind Shane Warne (708), Glenn McGrath (563), Dennis Lillee (355) in the list.
