Indian pacer Mohammed Shami marked his comeback to competitive cricket with a fantastic 4-wicket haul for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh in Ranji Trophy on Thursday.

Playing his first competitive cricket match after almost a year, Shami’s 4-wicket haul massively helped his side in dismissing Madhya Pradesh for a first inning total of just 167.

After a wicketless first day which saw Bengal get bowled out for 228, Shami came roaring back on the second day and proved that he has still got it. Shami would finish with exceptional bowling figures of 4/54 at the Holkar Stadium. His brilliant spell also included 10 maiden overs.

Shami ended up bowling 19 out of Bengal’s 59 overs, the most for any bowler in the match so far. This again shows that the 34-year-old has now completely recovered from the ankle injury he sustained last year. It also displays that he can bowl for long hours as well.

With this performance, Shami sent a positive message to the Indian team about his fitness ahead of the all-important Border-Gavaskar series which can see him return to the international fold.

It is yet to be seen if BCCI would rush into their decision on Shami and take him to Perth right after the Madhya Pradesh match or will test him for another Ranji Trophy match, scheduled to be played on November 23 in Chandigarh.
