Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday became the most successful wicketkeeper in the history of IPL by taking his dismissals tally to 132, surpassing his India teammate Dinesh Karthik.

Dhoni, who took two catches in the IPL final against Mumbai Indians, has now taken 94 catches and effected 38 stumpings.

Karthik, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, has 131 dismissals to his credit while Robin Uthappa has 90 scalps behind the stumps.

Dhoni reached the milestone with a diving catch off Deepak Chahar to dismiss his opposite number Rohit Sharma. Before that he took a dolly off Shardul Thakur’s bowling to remove Quinton de Kock.

However, his team failed to defend its IPL title as MI pulled off a thrilling last-ball win to lift a record fourth title – the most in the tournament’s 12-year history.

Batting first, MI were guided to 149/8 thanks to a late blitz from Kieron Pollard who remained unbeaten on 41 off 25 – an innings during which he struck three fours and as many sixes. In reply, CSK opener Shane Watson scored 80 off 59 but was unable to take his team over the line. Lasith Malinga, who was expensive in his first three overs, delivered a memorable final over as he picked up a wicket off the very last delivery with CSK needing two runs to claim victory.
