India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni completed 10,000 runs in international cricket as captain, during the third Test against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Tuesday. Dhoni achieved the feat during India’s second innings on the final day of the Test, as India were battling to save the game against a confident Australian side.

Dhoni cracked two fours off Ryan Harris’ over to being up his 10,000 runs, joining the likes of Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith, Steven Fleming and and Allan Border.

Dhoni has played 89 Tests, 250 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 50 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for India since his career started in December 2005. In 89 Tests, Dhoni has scored 4,841 runs at an average a shade above 38. The 33-year-old has scored six centuries and 33 half-centuries. His highest score in the format is of 224, against Australia which came at Chennai in 2013.

The Indian skipper, who has several records in his name, has somewhow failed to transform the success that he has achieved in the One-Day International (ODI) and T20I formats. Under him India won the ICC World Cup 2011 and ICC World T20 2007, but in Tests, after leading India to the pinnacle of Test summit, Dhoni’s team has struggled in Test cricket.
