Australian legend Ian Chappell feels that MS Dhoni may be over staying his time as India captain. Dhoni who started of well at the beginning where he was all shrewd in all formats of the games and success in every series he captained in. Chappell felt that continuing for captain for long can have a weakening effect on the time as much as a player appointed for a job not fit from him. Dhoni has been going through a bad patch both as a player and as captain, winning his last One-Day International series back in 2014 against West Indies at home.  Full Cricket Scorecard: India vs Australia 2015-16, 5th ODI at Sydney

Chappell writing for column in MID-DAY added that Indian currently is in desperate need of good ideas and approaches to the game. In the recently series against Australia, India managed to give up around 1,300 runs a span of four ODI innings which in all probability is not only because of bad bowling and flat pitches. Chappell further went on to say that Virat Kohli is an equally enticing alternative for Dhoni to captain the ODI team once he decided to give up his stint .

Chappell gave contrasting  examples of current and former captains who have been though the transition period of their respective time as leader’s. England’s Alastair Cook is one such captain who after losing The Ashes 5-0 to Australia not only managed to survives playing at the very top but also guided his team to an home series victory over Australia and thus reclaiming the coveted Ashes trophy last year. More recently defeating South Africa in humiliating way at home in Tests.

Chappell went on to add that it is not only up to the captain to achieve success for the team but need good cooperation from the whole team and support staff included. He stated that captaincy is not all about how much one is famous or popular but about making the right decisions and earning respect of players. Cook for that matter is not the most flamboyant of a captain or outing going as a player but his hard work and perseverance  is what makes him stand out from the rest of the team, despite not being in great scoring form.

Chappell went on to equate Greg Chappell that Australia enjoyed a great deed of success under him but on a personal note he never performed up to his regular standards in batting. Another great captain for Australia, Mark Taylor has similar traits. Under Taylor Australia had a great undefeated record but as far as his personal form goes it was not one could boast off.
