MS Dhoni is set to return as the skipper of Chennai Super Kings after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out in the remainder of the IPL 2025. Ahead of their clash with Kolkata Knight Riders, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming revealed that Ruturaj Gaikwad has suffered a fracture in his left elbow and will miss the remainder of the 18th season.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out the IPL due to a fracture on his elbow. We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as the captain in the remaining games,” Fleming told reporters in Chennai on Thursday.

“We are disappointed and feel for him. We appreciate the efforts that he has made in terms of trying to play, but unfortunately, he will be out of the tournament,” Fleming added.

Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured in the ongoing IPL during their clash against Rajasthan Royals at Guhwati on April 30. The incident took place in the second over of the chase, when the 28-year-old stepped out to face right-arm seamer Tushar Deshpande while chasing a target of 183 runs.

In the five matches played by CSK this season, Gaikwad scored two half-centuries while batting at the No. 3 position.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time MS Dhoni has returned as CSK’s captain mid-season, a similar situation occurred in IPL 2022 when Ravindra Jadeja was relieved of the leadership role.
