New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Surinder Khanna on Thursday said that the decision taken by MS Dhoni, to step down as the captain in limited-overs format, should be respected, as every player has a shelf life. “Dhoni has been an outstanding player. Indian cricket has done very well under him and won many trophies. I believe that every player has a shelf life,” he said. Dhoni has stepped down as the captain of the Indian ODI and T20I cricket teams, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) intimated in a press release on Wednesday. However, Dhoni informed the board that he would be available for selection for the upcoming series against England, but wouldn’t be continuing the skipper’s role.
“Mahendra Singh Dhoni has informed the BCCI, that he wishes to step down as the captain of the Indian Cricket Team from the One Day Internationals and the T20 Internationals formats of the game,” the board said in a statement. Dhoni captained India in 199 One-day Internationals (ODI), winning 110 and losing 74, with four ties and 11 no-results. He has a winning percentage of 59.57. He also led India in 72 T20 Internationals, winning 41 and losing 28, with one tie and two no-results.

Virat Kohli might lead India in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against England, which begins on January 15 at Pune. Kohli has had a successful stint as India’s Test captain and will look to transform that into the limited-overs, if given a chance. The selection committee is believed to meet on January 6 to pick the team.
