Mumbai create record against Goa in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016-17

If we consider only matches of 50 overs or fewer, Mumbai's win by 266 balls spare is the eighth-biggest margin victory in terms of balls left.

Mumbai recorded huge margin victory over Goa in the recently concluded contest between them at MRF Pachyappas Ground, Chennai. Mumbai, led by Aditya Tare, ran through against neighbours Goa, by bowling them out for mere 95. Chasing a small total, both Mumbai openers Shreyas Iyer and Rohit Sharma were bowled out by Goa in 2.2 overs. After their departure, Suryakumar Yadav and skipper Tare went all guns blazing: they kept hammering Goa bowlers till they won the match by 8 wickets with 266 balls remaining. The victory margin is now the second-highest in terms of balls left in List A cricket on Indian soil.

Overall, the record for largest margins victory by runs in a List A match is 346 balls by Somerset against Devon in 1990. However, that was a 60-over match. If we consider only matches of 50 overs or fewer, Mumbai’s win by 266 balls spare is the eighth-biggest margin victory in terms of balls left. The Indian record stays with Railways, who chased completed the chase in just 5.3 overs and won the match with 267 balls left against Rajasthan in 2014-15.

The foundation of Mumbai’s huge victory was laid by Shardul Thakur, who began everything by taking the wicket of Goa opener Prathamesh Gawas in the fourth over of the match. In the next over, Dhawal Kulkarni joined hands with Thakur, sending Amogh Desai back to pavilion in the next over. Abhishek Nayar ended up taking 4 wickets of Goa while Kulkarni got 3. Goa were all out for 95 in 35 overs. The top-score from their side was 23 by captain Sagun Kamat.

Three Goa bowlers got to bowl. Saurabh Bandekar bowled 3 overs and conceded 52 with the wicket of Iyer, while Felix Alemao leaked 31 from 2 and got Rohit. Darshan Misal bowled only 4 balls and gave away 16 runs.
