IPL has already started making rounds, as the 10th edition is set to begin on April 5. Two-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will aim to become the most celebrated side by clinching the title for the third time. Rohit Sharma-led side will begin their campaign playing the first game against Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) on April 6 at their home ground Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MI headed into the auctions by retaining 20 players, which included their key members Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh, among others. However, the noticeable exclusions were Martin Guptill and Corey Anderson. MI entered the IPL auction 2017 with 20 players and had the liberty to purchase 7 international players with INR 11.5 crores in their kitty. Their highest bid was Karn Sharma for INR 3.2 crores. He played for defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) until 2016. MI’s former players also made their way back to the side: Mitchell Johnson and Saurabh Tiwary. Some newbie such as Asela Gunaratne, Nicholas Pooran, Krishnappa Gowtham and Kulwant Khejroliya were also included in the side to build a formidable unit.
The MI brigade will also see a change in their head coach, as Mahela Jayawardene will be taking over the responsibilities from Ricky Ponting. In IPL 2016, MI did stand a chance to make it to the playoffs. However, series of losses in the last few matches landed them at No. 5 in the points table with a net run rate of +0.146.
