Nathan Lyon broke into the Australian One-Day International (ODI) side for the tri-series in Zimbabwe, he also played the ODI’s in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but suddenly finds himself out of favour with the selectors

For the longest time Lyon was considered only for Tests. His appearances in the One-Day format have been sporadic and Xavier Doherty was Australia’s limited overs first choice spinner. Lyon finally got an opportunity when he was selected for the tri-series in Zimbabwe and the ODIs against Pakistan in the UAE but the Australian Selectors seem to have reverted to their old policy which is a sign that they want Lyon to concentrate on the longer format. As a result the off-spinner’s place has yet again been taken by Xavier Doherty for the 3 remaining ODI’s against South Africa at home and he may have missed the boat to the ICC World Cup 2015 according to Foxsports.

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann’s thoughts regarding this move seem in sync with that of the selectors.

“No, we just feel like he’s (Doherty) got a really good opportunity, He played really well in the UAE for us in a couple of games. Nathan Lyon is playing the Shield cricket which is important for his development as a Test bowler. There’s no right or wrong answer there. Xavier’s the one we picked here,” Lehmann was quoted saying.
