Mid Innings Report

Mirpur: Mar 25, 2011
South Africa lost the wicket of well-set Jacques Kallis for 47 thanks to a brilliant catch by Jacob Oram off the bowling of Tim Southee in their World Cup quarter-final match against New Zealand at Mirpur.
The pair of Jacques Kallis and AB Dev Villiers were steadily accumulating the runs after Oram earlier, gave New Zealand a vital breakthrough, snuffing out Smith for 28 after he raised a 61-run second-wicket partnership with Jacques Kallis.
The Smith-Kallis combo rebuilt the innings after the early exit of Hashim Amla. The pair were up against some tight New Zealand bowling after Daniel Vettori resorted to an all-spin opening bowling attack – opening the bowling together with Nathan McCullum – a move that paid dividends when McCullum had Amla attempting a cut shot off a delivery which he under-edged it and was gobbled up at slip by Vettori for 7. It was sweet revenge for the bowler after Amla carved him through point and cover for his first boundary in the same over.
Kallis was tight in his defence while not missing out on the opportunity to show his aggression when loose balls were on offer – a thumping boundary off Vettori over long-off was a treat before he survived a confident lbw appeal off the next ball which didn’t go for review.
He took a liking for Tim Southee – belting him for two boundaries.
Graeme Smith was bogged down at the other end, but soon got into the boundary-hitting act, clunking Jacob Oram past point for his first boundary in the tenth over.
Earlier, New Zealand were restricted to 221 for 8 in its allotted 50 overs. Jesse Ryder top-scored for the Black Caps with a fine 83 while Ross Taylor hit 43. Mornel Morkel snared three wickets while Dale Steyn and Imran Tahir snaffled two wickets each.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 221 for 8 (Jesse Ryder 83, Ross Taylor 43, Kane Williamson 38*; Morne Morkel 3 for 46, Imran Tahir 2 for 32, Dale Steyn 2 for 42) vs South Africa 110 for 3 in 25 overs (Jacques Kallis 47; AB de Villiers 26*, JP Duminy 1*; Nathan McCullum 1 for 15, Jacob Oram 1 for 19, Tim Southee 1 for 26).
