New Zealand emerged victorious by 77 runs in the first One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh at Christchurch on Monday. The Kiwis successfully defended their total of 341 by 77 runs as Bangladesh were cleaned up for 264 in 44.5 overs. New Zealand seamers did a commendable job in chipping wickets at regular intervals and carrying the team over the finish line. Jimmy Neesham and Lockie Freguson shared 6 wickets between them to romp home to a scintillating victory and gain a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing 342 in New Zealand is never an easy task. Bangladesh got off to a steady start but Tim Southee steamed in and got rid of Imrul Kayes for 16, and provided New Zealand a much-needed breakthrough.
Neesham inflicted massive damaged by getting rid of Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah in quick succession. Sarkar was undone for 1 while Mahmudullah was dismissed for the same score. Shakib Al Hasan played well for his 59 and resisted for long but Ferguson got the better of him with a beauty. Mushfiqur Rahim was unlucky to have been retired hurt after a good start of 42. Mosaddek Hossain played a good hand lower down the order and scored an unbeaten fifty. Trent Boult bowled well with the new ball but didn’t manage to scalp a single wicket. Southee had couple while Mitchell Santner bagged a solitary wicket.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first. Tom Latham played a superb knock of 137 and helped New Zealand in putting a massive total of 341. Martin Guptill was deceived by a slower delivery by Mustafizur Rahman and ended up giving a simple catch to Sarkar.
Kane Williamson got a start but Taskin Ahmed ended his run on 31. Neil Broom failed to make a mark and was dismissed for 22 by Shakib. Neesham also failed with the bat as Shakib removed him for 12.
Latham played with unmatched confidence and stitched a match-winning partnership with Colin Munro. Munro played a belligerent knock 87 off 61 deliveries as they duo put up a stand of 158 runs between them.
Bangladeshi bowlers had to drill hard for the wickets and had a torrid time on the field. Rahman bowled well for his 3 wickets whereas Taskin had 2 to his name. Shakib did a good job overall in picking 3 wickets and scoring a half-century.
