New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson will be sidelined for at least a year following the discovery of another back stress fracture sustained during the first Test against South Africa in Mount Maunganui. The 29-year-old was absent for the second Test at Seddon Park, where New Zealand secured a historic series win over the Proteas. Scans revealed a new injury in the same area as the previous fracture, for which Jamieson underwent surgery last February. However, medical staff have opted against another operation.
Reflecting on the setback, Jamieson expressed his emotions, acknowledging the challenge of facing another extended period on the sidelines.
“I understand that injuries are a natural part of a cricketer’s journey, and despite my current setback, I remain optimistic about my future playing career. With my age in consideration, I believe there are still plenty of playing days ahead of me.”
“Although this is a challenging time, I’m encouraged by the potential for recovery and the opportunities that lie ahead. There’s a clear path forward, and I’m hopeful for a successful rehabilitation process and a strong return to the game.”
It’s just about trying to have faith in that and have faith in the bigger picture, and know that I can get back and get through this.
“In time, it’ll be a little blip on the radar and we’ll have some good stuff to show for it, I’m sure.”
Jamieson boasts an impressive record of 80 wickets at an average of 19.73 in 19 Tests since his debut in 2020.

Despite facing another setback, the fast bowler remains optimistic, finding solace in the familiarity of the injury and the lessons learned from past experiences.
“In reflecting on the past few years, I’ve noticed certain patterns emerging, especially in how I prepare for red-ball cricket,” he explained. “Experiencing setbacks like this helps me recognize these patterns and refine my approach. History has shown that when I get this process right, there’s still plenty of cricket left to be played. That gives me a lot of hope moving forward.”
Jamieson expressed confidence in his ability to overcome challenges, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive mindset throughout the recovery process.
“Reflecting on those moments when I’ve performed well despite physical limitations, it makes me wonder what I can achieve when I’m at full strength,” he remarked. “I’ll keep that vision in mind and continue striving towards it, knowing that I can emerge stronger on the other side.
“While there are hurdles to overcome, particularly on the mental and emotional fronts, I’m aware that the physical aspect is relatively straightforward — rest and gradual rehabilitation. It’s almost like second nature at this point.
“Though it’s difficult to face another setback, I recognize it as part of my journey. As a tall fast bowler at the age of 29, I understand the demands of my profession and accept that injuries are an inevitable part of it. Despite the challenges, I’m optimistic about returning to the field and making the most of the cricket that lies ahead.”
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed empathy for Kyle Jamieson’s setback, acknowledging the effort Jamieson has invested in his return to international cricket.
“While it’s disheartening to receive news of Kyle’s setback, we’ve witnessed his unwavering determination to represent New Zealand,” Stead stated. “We are fully committed to supporting him throughout his rehabilitation journey. Despite this setback, his determination remains resolute, and we have full confidence in his ability to overcome this challenge.”
