West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran made history on Friday at Tarouba, breaking Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan’s world record for most runs in T20s in a calendar year.
Pooran achieved this record in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 game for his side Trinbago Knight Riders against Barbados Royals. In the match, Pooran continued his red-hot form and played an impressive knock of 27 runs off 15 balls consisting of 4 boundaries and a six.
This knock, along with fine scores from skipper Kieron Pollard (42), Keacy Carty (32) and Andre Russell (31), took the team to 175/7, which they defended successfully by restricting Barbados to 145/9.
Pooran is the leading run-getter in T20s this year, with 2,059 runs in 66 matches with a strike rate of 160.85 and best score of 98. He has scored 14 half-centuries this year which is quite astonishing.
With the knock, he broke the record for most T20 runs in a calendar year which was previously held by Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan who scored 2,036 runs in 48 T20s back in 2021 at an average of 56.60. He had a century and 18 fifties to his name as well.
In CPL 2024, Pooran has scored 312 runs in 9 innings at an average of 39.00, with a strike rate of 175.28 and best score of 97. He has 2 half-centuries in the competition and is the fourth-highest run-getter.
