This has resulted in his suspension for the next two T20Is against India and Bangladesh on March 12 and 16 respectively. Thisara Perera has been named stand-in captain. Other Sri Lankan players were fined 60 per cent of their match fees according to an ICC release. Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah was also fined 20 per cent, while his teammates received 10 per cent fines after they were found an over short.

According to Article 2.5.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, relating to over-rate offences, a discretion of the first 2 overs result in players being fined 10 per cent of their match fee, and 20 per cent per additional over. However, the captains receive 2 suspension points which bans them from 1 Test or 2 ODIs/T20Is as per schedule. If the hosts are found guilty of a similar offence in a T20I in the next 12 months with Chandimal leading the side, he will receive between 2 and 8 suspension points.

Mahmudullah pleaded guilty so the case didn't require a formal hearing, whereas Chandimal pleaded not guilty to the offence at a hearing that took place on March 11.
