ENGLAND have pulled things back nicely in the 5th Ashes Test, reducing Australia to 259-8 in 94 overs at the time of writing in response to the hosts’ first inning total of 283.
Mark Wood, Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad picked two wickets each to help England claw back in the game.
Steve Smith was the top scorer for Australia on the day and battled his way out to a solid 71 before being dismissed by Chris Woakes.
Smith would have been run out for 44 but a debatable decision by third umpire Nitin Menon gave him a reprieve. Steve Smith was short of his crease when Bairstow dislodged the bails, however, the umpire felt that the bails were removed before Bairstow collected the ball.
The decision went in favour of Steve Smith, who had started to walk, sparking a huge controversy.
Please must read law 29.1, The wicket is broken when at least one bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps.

The ball hasn't been removed from the top of the stumps. An excellent decision by Nitin Menon ❤️#Ashes2023pic.twitter.com/Oj33D5l5tB
The gutsy call by Nitin Menon was widely appreciated with fans praising him for making the right call. Even India cricketer R Ashwin voted in favour of Nitin Menon for making the right decision.
