A score of 451 at any level is a stupendous achievement and for the 17-year-old wonder kid Vijay Zol, the feeling is yet to sink in.
The boy from Jalna district in Marathwada region, has stunned the cricket fraternity scoring 451 against Assam, in a Cooch Behar Trophy match, at Nashik today.
“I was batting on 264 yesterday and felt that I could reach 400 if I can score a few runs quickly. It’s been a memorable experience,” the 17-year-old boy told PTI over phone from Nashik.
The teenager is a school drop-out as he quit studies after ninth standard. If one is expecting a sob story, they would be in for a shock.
“When I was in ninth standard, I told my dad that I want to quit studies and concentrate fully on cricket. He believed in me and I been able to repay a bit of it,” Zol said.
Zol’s father is an advocate and he prepared a concrete pitch on the backyard of their residence for his practice.
“There aren’t any good turf wickets for practice in Jalna. So my father got a concrete pitch made for me,” the southpaw who has been coached by Raju Kane said.
He has been a part of the West Zone U-19s and is now eyeing a berth in the national squad for the U-19 World Cup which will be held in Australia, next year.
Asked about whether he has got any congratulatory calls, the fan of Suresh Raina (He is seen standing alongside Raina in his Facebook profile picture) informs, “MCA chief Ajay Shirke and Bhave sir (national selector Surendra Bhave) called up to congratulate me. Now my aim is to secure a berth in the India U-19 squad for World Cup.” (PTI)
