Ever since its introduction, day-night Test matches have been in talks. After the success of first day-night Test match, many teams, including India showed interest in hosting matches in this new format. There were many speculations of India playing at least one Day-Night Test with the touring New Zealand team this season. But recently in a statement, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur has confirmed that there will be no Day-Match Test matches between the New Zealand and India this season. However, the format, as well as the pink ball will be used in domestic matches. READ: Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and other top Indian Test cricketers to play Duleep Trophy with pink ball?
As reported by Cricbuzz, Thakur said, “The New Zealand tour of India will be day matches. For now, pink ball will be used only for the Duleep Trophy which will be a day-and-night affair.”
Thakur had earlier, as quoted by Indian Express, said, “All players will be playing Duleep Trophy; that is why we have gone for day-night domestic cricket for first time. We want to know how the player feels, how the dew conditions will be. With top players playing we will get a good feedback.
“We will come to know what advantages and disadvantages are of playing with pink ball. Before jumping straight away in Tests cricket these top Indian players will be playing it in Duleep Trophy. We will make sure that top cricketers participate in Duleep Trophy,”
Earlier, the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata became the first Indian venue to host a pink-ball match. With the top-ranked players like Virat Kohli, Rvaichandran Ashwin expressing their interest in playing under lights with a pink ball, it will be interesting to see if India finally gets to host a Day-Night Test match this season.
