Manan Sharma and Abishek Gupta slammed individual hundreds and combined forces to add a massive 288 runs for the fourth wicket and place North Zone Universities in a sound position on day one of the three-day Vizzy Cricket Trophy tie against East Zone Universities.

Number four Sharma, a left hander, and number five Gupta came together when North, who opted to bat first, were struggling at 71 for three in the 17th over, and by the time they parted ways following the dismissal of the former for 185 in only 194 balls, their team score had advanced to 359 in just under 74 overs.

Sharma cracked 23 fours and four sixes in his 221-minute knock that demoralised East bowlers, while Gupta gave him good support in making 124 off 197 balls with 16 hits to the fence before getting out to second new ball off medium pacer Jitendra Singh.

At stumps, left hander Himanshu Satyawan was not out on a breezy 60 with 10 fours and a six in 81 balls while Manvinder Singh (45 off 55 balls) was the other not out batsmen in an unbroken sixth wicket partnership of 94 runs.

Jitendra Singh was the most successful bowler with two wickets to his credit.

Brief scores: North Zone Univ. 484 for 5 (D Sharya 37, Manan Sharma 185, A Gupta 124, H Satyawan 60 not out, Manvinder Singh 45 not out; Jitendra Singh 2 for 69) v East Zone Univ.

In another match, West Zone Universities, choosing to bat, made 375 for five against South Zone Varsities, with Mumbai Ranji Trophy player Siddesh Lad’s 140 being the highlight of their innings.

Lad built upon the good foundation laid by number two, captain Swapnil Salvi (45) and number three Kevin D’Almeida (69) — who put on 92 runs for the second wicket after the fall of opener Samarth Dixit for a duck — to collar the South attack by hitting 22 fours and a six in 131 balls.

The three-down batsman later retired to the pavilion after a stay of 244 minutes. His good work was continued by number six Manvendra Singh who remained unconquered on 92 in 183 balls with 13 fours.

S Daniel claimed two of the five wickets to fall.(PTI)

Brief scores: West Zone Univ. 375 for 5 (S Salvi 45, K D’Almeida 69, S Lad 140 retd., Manvendra Singh not out 92; Dhruv Mehta not out 12; S Daniel 2 for 87) v South Zone Univ.
