Oman came up with a stellar performance to shock Ireland in Group A Round 1 Match 4 of the ongoing ICC World T20 2016, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala on Wednesday. Three Oman batsman — Zeeshan Maqsood, Khawar Ali, and Aamer Ali — scored more than 30 runs to allow Oman to register the first major upset of the tournament. Earlier, Ireland skipper William Porterfield won the toss and elected to bat first. Ireland finished on a challenging total of 154 for the loss of five wickets, courtesy of Gary Wilson’s top-score of 38. Oman started the chase on a very positive note, as they came up with an opening stand of 69 runs thanks to openers Maqsood and Khawar. Kevin O’Brien took the first wicket when he had Khawar out bowled for 34. The wicket was followed by his fellow opener Maqsood, who too fell off the same bowled and in similar fashion. He had scored a valiant 38. LIVE CRICKET UPDATES: Ireland vs Oman, ICC World T20 2016, Group A Round 1, Match 4 at Dharamsala
Following the dismissal of the openers, Oman’s innings seemed to come apart as they lost another three quick wickets. Adnan Ilyas (4) was dismissed by Max Sorensen in the 13th over after being caught by Paul Stirling. Following that the hard-hitting Mehran Khan (2) was dismissed by Andy McBrine in the 14th over after being caught by William Porterfield. Aamir Kaleem (0) was then dismissed in the very same over after being trapped leg before wicket.
What followed was a shocking 47-run stand for the sixth wicket between Jatinder Singh and Aamer Ali. The latter played perhaps the innings of the match, thrashing the Irish bowlers to submission. Jatinder fell for 24 to Boyd Rankin, who bowled him up in the 18th over. It was followed by the wicket of Oman skipper Sultan Ahmed in the 19th over for 1. He was unfortunately run out. The final over saw Aamer get caught behind by Niall O’Brien off Peter Sorensen for what was ultimately a match-winning 32, but by then it was too late for Ireland. Oman saw the match through with just a couple of balls remaining after wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien conceded 4 byes between his legs.
Brief scores:
Ireland 154 for 5 in 20 Overs (Paul Striling 29, Gary Wilson 38; Munis Ansari 3 for 34) lost to Oman 157 for 8 in 19.4 Overs (Zeeshan Maqsood 38, Khawar Ali 34; Kevin O’Brien 2 for 25) by 2 wickets.
Man of the Match: Aamer Ali
