The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chief patron Asif Ali Zardari is yet to decide on the replacement for the incumbent PCB chairman Ijaz Butt whose tenure is set to end on Friday.
According to a report in The Express Tribune, no decision has yet been made of his extension, or a possible replacement and the indecision from the presidency has triggered divided rumours in the cricket fraternity.
“No decision has been made about Butt’s extension,” the Pakistan President’s spokesperson Farhatullah Babar was quoted in The Express Tribune. He added that the President has kept all possibilities open by refusing to give any more details.
The PCB chairman, in his recent interviews, has kept mum on the matter. This would imply that a delay in decision will result in Butt carrying on his duties, according to an official close to PCB.
“Butt will continue to head the board if the situation prevails,” said the official. “He would not become defunct until the appointment of a new chairman despite an end to his tenure.”
Butt is however expected to attend the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in near future.
Various PCB sources were quoted in The Express Tribune “The chairman is likely to attend the meeting,” said the official. “However, everyone is concerned about the future as any decision will affect a lot of people working in the board.”
Butt took over the position as PCB chairman from predecessor Nasim Ashraf on October 8, 2008.
