Phil Hughes, who was injured during a Sheffield Shield match between West End Redbacks and New South Wales, has undergone surgery and is in an induced state of coma. Hughes was hit by a Sean Abbott bouncer on the side of his head, despite having worn a helmet.

“As you’re aware Phil Hughes was injured today and he’s undergoing surgery. The outcome of that surgery is unlikely to be known for 24-48 hours, we ask you to respect the privacy of his family and friends.”, Tim Nielsen,  South Australia Cricket Association General Manager High Performance was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“He is in a critical condition and undergoing surgery. He underwent a set of scans to assess the injury.”, said hospital spokesman David Faktor.
