Philp Hughes, who had recently shined for Australia A in the quadrangular series against India A, South Africa A and Australia’s National Performance squad (NPS), was disappointed to miss out on the selection in Australia’s One-Day squad which will tour Zimbabwe to play a Tri-series against the hosts and South Africa.
“I was really disappointed to not get selected for that [ODI squad], but that’s how it is,” Hughes told cricket.com.au in Townville on Wednesday. He also said he will keep scoring runs in domestic cricket and that will be his only way of making a comeback in the national squad.
“I don’t like to dwell on what’s happened,” Hughes told cricket.com.au in June of his revolving door to the national team. If you don’t pick yourself up and keep moving forward you’re going to be left right back in the pack. That’s something I’ve always looked to do, stay really positive in my mindset and pick myself up and look to get better every time I train. The bottom line is performance and consistency. If I can nail those two things hopefully in the not too distant future I can be back in that national set-up. All I can do is continue to play some consistent cricket,” Hughes was saying ahead of the Australia A series against South Africa A.
Hughes so far scored 513 runs on the Australia A tour at an average of 73.29. The 50-over leg of the tour brought 332 runs at 110.67, including his remarkable unbeaten 202, the first ever List A double-century by an Australian male.
Rod Marsh, the chairman of Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel and Australia coach Darren Lehmann have both publicly said Hughes was “unlucky” not to have been named in the 14-man squad, with the final spot coming down to a choice between him and Test number five Steven Smith.
