Damien Martyn, who played in the Help for Heroes vs Rest of the World charity match at The Oval, expressed his excitement and pleasure in playing alongside India’s limited-overs captain, MS Dhoni. Martyn shared an image on Facebook and wrote, “Loved meeting and playing alongside the great man MS Dhoni Champion person.” Dhoni was named the Man of the Match in the game when he helped his team, Help for Heroes, by five wickets against Rest of the World on September 17. Martyn scored six runs before he was dismissed by Daniel Vettori. He was caught by Scott Styris. Chasing 159 to win, the Help for Heroes side had to face some nervous moments, including a wicket in the final over of the game when they needed a few runs to win. Dhoni was unbeaten on 38 off 22 balls, hitting four fours and one six.
The Help for Heroes team had the likes of former England captain and the current director of cricket Andrew Strauss, the dashing South African opener Herschelle Gibbs, India’s explosive batsman Virender Sehwag, Dhoni, Australia’s Damien Martyn, Dawid Malan, Major Storm Green, Graeme Swann, Simon Jones, Matthew Hogard, Darren Gough and Jonathan Parker.
The Rest of the World XI has the likes of Brendon McCullum, Graeme Smith, Matthew Hayden, Mahela Jayawardene, Corporal Jake Wray, Brian Lara, Abdul Razzaq, Scott Styris, Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee, Shapoor Zadran and Azhar Mahmud.
The charity match between Help for Heroes and Rest of the World has reportedly generated £300,000. Surrey Chief Executive Richard Gould said, “This was a fantastic end-of-season party, attended by a galaxy of cricketing stars and 20,000 happy cricket fans. To be able to have this good a time whilst raising nearly 300,000 for a wonderful cause is absolutely perfect and I would like to thank everyone who gave their time and effort to make it a truly memorable occasion.”
