Virat Kohli shared a picture of himself with Stuart Binny after a hardcore training session with Team India’s physical trainer Shankar Basu. Basu, who has been a part of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2015, joined the Indian team for the tour of Sri Lanka. Basu has spent time at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore and with the Tamil Nadu Ranji Trophy team also. One of the respected fitness professionals in the world, Basu is well known for working not only on strength and power but speed and agility too. India’s squash players Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal are among few celebrated names to train at Basu’s Primal Patterns Holistic Fitness Studio in Chennai. After Nitin Patel resigned in May as the physiotherapist, Australia’s Patrick Farhart took over. Farhart has been working with Basu since then, the latter having replaced Sudarshan, former trainer.
Speaking about working with Basu, Farhart was quoted as saying by BCCI’s official website, We are in the process of chalking out off-season plans for each player. For that, the ideal situation would be that when the players are not with us in the Indian team setup, they are able to replicate their programmes at the state and academy level, or wherever they are. The physiotherapist and physical trainer have to be in sync with each other in terms of understanding the players’ physical requirements and their bodies.”
“The relationship between Basu and I is very interesting. We had some different ideas for the players in regards with how things have been done in the past and how we want to move forward. I have had very fruitful conversations with Basu and our masseur, Arun Kanade, and we think of ourselves as a separate team within the team. All of us are each other’s eyes and ears. It is very important for us to have a good rapport and we have developed that. The three of us need to have very open, honest and frequent communication as to where we see the players’ status with regard to recovery, fitness and injury,” he added.
