India’s most successful bowler Anil Kumble was appointed head coach of Indian Cricket Team in 2016 before India’s tour of West Indies. His term with the team comes to an end after ICC Champions Trophy 2017, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started searching candidates for the coveted post. As per BCCI’s statement, the process will be monitored by advisory committee, while the same trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who conducted interviews during Kumble’s appointment, will carry out the same responsibilities once again. But fans and many cricket experts have started raising questions and criticised BCCI’s decision of searching for new coach because under Kumble’s reign as head coach, India gained enormous success and claimed the top spot in Test rankings. A total of 12 Tests win came after Kumble became the coach of Indian side with only one defeat and four draws.
In limited overs matches, out of 8 ODIs, India won 5 and lost 3, while in T20Is, the team won and lost 2 each, while one ended with no result. Meanwhile, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, the secretary of the Lodha Committee, slammed the BCCI calling their methods ‘silly.’ Saying Kumble does not deserve this kind of treatment, Sankaranarayanan said, “Kumble does not deserve this kind of treatment. This isn’t the right way to treat your national coach. One year coaching tenure is a ludicrous thing to do. For a national coach, year-to-year appointment isn’t the way forward.
Who will come for one year tenure? You can see that this is done deliberately by the board officials. You can’t be giving a piece meal to your national coach. The next contract should not be for a year.” On the other hand, one more shocking news have come related to Kumble and that is players are apparently unhappy with his overbearing attitude. Going by reports, players are unhappy that there is no freedom in the dressing room. It appears that Kumble does not enjoy the confidence of the players. However, irrespective of what kind of news have come about Kumble, here is your chance to cast your votes and let us know whether he should continue as coach or not.
It will be interesting whether the viewers views matches with the future decision of BCCI over next Indian coach, who is expected to continue till 2019 World Cup.
