A fine spell of leg-spin by Samar Quadri helped Jharkhand restrict Goa to 189 in their first innings and take a vital first innings lead on the second day of the four-day Plate group Ranji trophy match at Keenan stadium.

Resuming at two for one, Goa’s overnight unbeaten opener Sher Bahadur Yadav (8) and Vidyadhar Kamat (0) returned cheaply after Jharkhand strike bowlers S S Rao and Jaskaran Singh struck early to jolt the visitors’ run chase.

Reagan Pinto (36; 2×4), who stepped in following the dismissal of Yadav, and Keenan Vaz (14; 2×4) steadied the innings stitching valuable 34 runs for the fifth wicket before Vaz returned a simple catch in the follow through to Quadri, who returned with a rich haul of five for 43.

Even as Goa lost seven wickets for a paltry 80 runs, Robin D’souza (54) and Amit Yadav (unbeaten 48) displayed a cautious knock to rescue their side from early collapse as they paired for a 97-run stand for the eight wicket.

D’souza, who had a strokeful knock, found the gap and dispatched the ball to fence eight times for his 54 off 107 deliveries.

D’souza misread a rising delivery and edged a catch to captain Shahbaz Nadeem off Quadri.

Amit Yadav impressed the spectators with his scintillating knock, notching up unbeaten 48 studded with five fours and two sixes off 94 balls.

Rao and debutant Singh, who replaced Rahul Shukla, shared two wickets each.
