Former India skipper Rahul Dravid has been announced as Delhi Daredevils’ (DD) new mentor for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Dravid is currently the coach of India Under-19 team and the India A team. It was under his tutelage that the Under-19 team managed to reach the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2016, losing the final against West Indies. The loss in the final was Dravid’s first loss as their coach. Dravid has had the experience of playing For Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). After he announced his retirement from IPL, he was appointed mentor RR, a team which has been banned for a couple of years. DD had dismissed former India coach Gary Kirsten as coach after they failed to make it to the playoffs last season as well and perhaps feel that Rahul Dravid will be an ideal addition to the team. “Dravid is keen to take up the role of a mentor, but he is reluctant to be full-time coach. He has had a long season starting with the India ‘A’ team in June and he just got free after the ICC U19 World Cup, last week. He wants to spend more time with his family as well,” a source close to the development was quoted as saying by The Times of India. READ: Rahul Dravid: Armaan Jaffer, Sarfaraz Khan very talented
In the Press conference that was called to unveil him as the new mentor, Dravid said, “Its great to be a part of Delhi Daredevils, looking forward to work with TA Sekhar and Paddy Upton. DD have also roped in several U-19 players, like Rishabh Pant, Mahipal Lomror and Khaleel Ahmed, with whom Dravid is perhaps familiar with.
