Rahul Dravid reckons that India is on the brink of becoming a sporting giant. He stressed upon the importance of infrastructure in sport.
According to hindustantimes Dravid specially alluded to infrastructure for sport in the more remote areas of the country, and the fact that Corporate India needs to step in further to bridge the gap between the common man and the World Stage, he was quoted saying,
“Having a large base of population is a great opportunity. But it needs a level of organisation behind it. There are a number of small places that are coming out on the scene, we are on the cusp; there are number of leagues and events happening in the country, the question is how to take it to a different level. While the government should encourage, private players should come into the scene too. There is paucity of space and places where we can play”
The former India captain also strongly feels that the participation and performance of women athletes is a reflection of India’s progress and standing in world sport.
Dravid heaped praise on the women athletes who have been an inspiration for the rest of the nation, he said, “Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza are building on what PT Usha and MD Valsamma began. We may not be able to match the USA just yet, but we need to follow a similar path”
