Vadodara: Opener Murali Vijay‘s unbeaten 104 on the fourth and final day helped Tamil Nadu trounce Baroda by seven wickets and qualify for the Ranji Trophy cricket quarterfinals, here today.
Chasing 206 for a win at the the Moti Bagh Stadium, the Abhinav Mukund-led Tamil Nadu eased to their target in the second session of play and earned six points.
Karnataka, already assured of a berth in the last eight before the start of the game, finished on top of the Group with 33 points, including the one point earned in this match, while Tamil Nadu finished second with 29 points after defeating Baroda by seven wickets in the latter’s backyard.
Baroda new-ball bowler Sagar Mangalorkar (2-69) picked up a couple of early wickets to put the brakes on Tamil Nadu but Man of the Match Vijay stitched an unbeaten 69-run fourth-wicket partnership with Vijay Shankar (26 not out) to complete the formalities.
Earlier Tamil Nadu had responded with 188 to Baroda’s first-innings score of 149 and then bundled out the Aditya Waghmode-led side for 245 in the second innings.
Laxmipathy Balaji (3-65) picked up three wickets while new-ball bowlers Prasanth Parameswaran (2-52) and Aswin Crist (2-44) bagged up two wickets each.
Brief Scores: Baroda 149 (Saurav Wakaskar 51; Aswin Crist 4 for 40) and 245 (Swapnil Singh 83; Laxmipathy Balaji 3 for 65) lost to Tamil Nadu 188 (Baba Indrajith 37; Sagar Mangalorkar 7 for 49) and 207 for 3 in 50.2 overs (Murali Vijay 104*, Dinesh Karthik 35, Vijay Shankar 26*; Sagar Mangalorkar 2 for 69) by 7 wickets.
