Ranji Trophy 2014-15: Virat Singh’s century takes Jharkhand to 246 for 6

A fine century by Virat Singh helped Jharkhand reach 246 for six on the opening day of their Group C Ranji Trophy Cricket match against Kerala at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, here today. The 17-year-old Virat scored 100 with the help of 12 boundaries and two sixes in his 238-ball innings. He was dismissed by Basil Thampi (1/38) in the last over of the day.

At stumps, Kaushal Singh (21) was at the crease after the umpires decided to call it a day following Virat’s dismissal in the 90th over. Ishan Kishan (36) and Rameez Nemat (44) gave Jharkhand a decent start after skipper Saurabh Tiwary decided to bat first after winning the toss.

The duo shared a 70-run opening partnership before Ishan was bowled by Monish in the 15th over. Virat and Nemat then added another 42 runs before the latter was sent back to the hut by Rohan Prem in the 36th over with Raiphi Gomex taking the catch.

Jharkhand then lost two quick wickets in Tiwary (4) and Ishank Jaggi (9) to slip to 131-4 in 48.2 overs. Kumar Deobrat (24) provided support to Virat for sometime before he was caught by Basil Thampi off Amit Verma’s ball in the 71st over.

Virat and Kaushal then shared a 67-run partnership before the former was dismissed. Kumar Monish (2/59) and Rohan Prem (2/29) took two wickets each, while Thampi snapped one.
