The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come out with the Ranji Trophy 2015-16 schedule after the technical committee was out with the proposed changes for the premier domestic tournament of the country. In its proposed changes, the technical committee suggested increasing the number of overs per day from 90 to 95, without adding additional playing hours, and doing away with a point currently awarded to a side for drawing a match. Anil Kumble-led committee suggested the changes to ensure more result-oriented Ranji Trophy matches. The preliminary suggestions were discussed in the working committee meeting on April 26. BCCI’s governing body has asked for a final proposal in its next meeting.

After assessing last season’s Ranji results, which had results in 62 out of 115 games, the technical committee suggested adding five overs to each of the four days’ play to increase the possibility of a result. The committee also proposed doing away with the award of single point for salvaging a draw after conceding the lead. The working committee was briefed that with the existing format, teams are content with the first-innings result in most cases since both teams gain points, with three awarded for gaining the lead. As a result, the side that concedes the lead doesn’t really push for victory, making the second innings redundant on numerous occasions. The technical committee was of the opinion that by taking away a point for earning a draw, the teams will end up being more aggressive.

Earlier, former India captain Rahul Dravid said that the young players should take Ranji Trophy seriously as it can become their ticket to the Indian Premier League (IPL). “When we pick players, we look a lot at their Ranji Trophy performance as well. Of course there are specific T20 skills that we are looking for but we also want to see hunger, we also want to see consistency and we also want to see somebody who can deliver under pressure,” Dravid said. “My advice to young players is they also [should] take the Ranji Trophy very very seriously, because I think, without playing consistently successful domestic cricket, it is very very unlikely that you will be able to succeed coming to the IPL,” he told reporters here when asked about the upcoming players giving importance to the IPL over domestic cricket. “I think they are playing very well. When you come up against Australia — who I think is the better team than India. There is no harm in admitting that,” said Dravid when asked whether Indian team needed another ‘wall’ in the World Cup semi-final match against Australia.

“In the Australian conditions, Australia was the better team. Not [only] in that match, but right through Australia played better cricket, so there is a lesson to be learnt,” added Dravid. “It [the Indian team] is a young team and lot of these players will be playing in the next World Cup, so I think there is a lot of potential going ahead and I am quite excited…but yes, in Test cricket I think there are couple of areas where they need to work,” he said.
