Former champions Tamil Nadu continued to stay strong and bat on as they finished Day One on 261 for the loss of 6 wickets against defending champions Mumbai in the semi-final of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Sunday. Currently, Vijay Shankar is unbeaten on 41, while Aswin Crist remains unbeaten on 9. While for Mumbai, Shardul Thakur has claimed 2 for 64 and Abhishek Nayar has picked 2 for 56. As of now, Baba Indrajith and Kaushik Gandhi remain the top scorers with 64 and 50 runs each. Mumbai were off to a good start early on, while Tamil Nadu managed to settle down as the game progressed.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu skipper Abhinav Mukund won the coin toss and elected to bat first. With 45 runs on the board, the opening wicket fell in the form of Ganga Sridhar Raju for mere 19. After 23 more runs were added, skipper Mukund also fell for 38. However, it was followed by a massive 110-run stand between Indrajith and Gandhi, before Indrajith fell for 64 at the score of 178. Just 10 runs later, he was followed by Gandhi, who fell for 50. At the score of 202, it was wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Kathik, who fell for mere 16, while 29 more runs later, the final wicket of the day to fall was Baba Aparajith for 9.

Indrajith struck nine boundaries in his 114-ball knock, while Gandhi found the fence eight times and faced 137 deliveries. It was Nayar who gave Mumbai their first breakthrough when he had Ganga Sridhar Raju, making his First-Class debut, caught behind by Aditya Tare, reported PTI.
