Mumbai reached a total of 171 for 4 at stumps on Day Two of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17 semi-final against Tamil Nadu, at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Aditya Tare (19) and Shreyas Iyer (24) are currently holding the fort for Mumbai after they lost 3 wickets for as many runs. Mumbai are still trailing Tamil Nadu by 134 runs in the first innings. Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu could only add 44 runs as Shardul Thakur and Abhishek Nayar took 4 wickets each to bowl them out for 305 while Balwinder Sandhu and Vijay Gohil took 1 wicket each.
Replying to Tamil Nadu’s total of 305, Mumbai had a bad start as they lost their opener Prithvi Shaw (4) quickly. Following the early dismissal of Shaw, Praful Waghela (48) and No. 3 Suryakumar Yadav (73) constructed the Mumbai innings. Waghela and Suryakumar went on to put up a 121-run stand for the second wicket. The second wicket stand was broken by Tamil Nadu pacer Vijay Shankar, who dismissed Suryakumar. The right-hander played the role of an aggressor. The much-needed breakthrough was followed by another wicket, as Tamil were successful in sending back Waghela, who was involved in a terrible mix-up with Mumbai captain Aditya Tare, who came in at No. 4.
Siddhesh Lad, who walked in after Waghela’s wicket, was expected to provide stability to the sinking Mumbai innings, but he too perished for a three-ball duck to put his side in a spot of bother. The Mumbai side who were going strong with 125 runs on the board with just 1 wicket down, were stumbling on 128 for 4 wickets. But Iyer and Tare batted sensibly to provide an unbeaten stand of 43 runs by the time the Day Two’s play ended.
With three more days of this semi-final remaining, this game is evenly poised and is expected to yield more action as the days’ progress by.
Brief scores:
Tamil Nadu 305 (Baba Indrajith 64, Kaushik Gandhi 50, Vijay Shankar 50; Abhishek Nayar 4 for 66) lead Mumbai 171 for 4 (Suryakumar Yadav 73, Praful Waghela 48, Shreyas Iyer 24*; Vijay Shankar 1 for 14) by 134 runs.
