The 84th edition of Ranji Trophy is set to go underway from October 6. 28 teams will be battling it out for the coveted championship title. The two-tier system, Elite and Plate Divisions, will no longer be used. The 1950-51 runners-up, Gujarat, claimed the title for the first time in 2016-17. Only five teams have defended the title in the past – Mumbai, Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan and Karnataka. Mumbai have won most number of Ranji titles (41) followed by Karnataka (8), Delhi (7), Baroda (5) and Holkar (4).
This edition will have four groups, each comprising of seven teams. With an extra group in place, every team will play two fewer games. Each team will play three home games and three away. The top two teams from each group will proceed to the quarter-final. The BCCI have also done away with the neutral venue concept until the series reached the quarter-final stage. The winner will receive outright 6 points. There will be a bonus of 1 point for winning by an innings or 10 wickets.
